- chicken and mushroom in chicken broth (6pcs): $11.80
I didn’t realise that this place is a subsidiary of Bowltiful. Now that I know that I see the similarity in their naming practices… Also I realised there was literally a Bowltiful next door.
This was nice. It was a cold day and I needed a quick feed for lunch, and this was exactly what I wanted to eat. The soup comes in this massive bowl. You can choose 6pc or 10pcs. You can also choose different soup bases - there was chicken broth, tomato, and I think a spicy one.
I haven't actually had chicken wonton before - the dumplings I eat are the vast majority pork. It did taste different. I don't think I would have been able to tell it was chicken though, if I hadn't known. The mushroom taste was very strong, as well as a strong pepperness which was nice and warming. It felt a bit like I was eating one of those beef tendon balls except this was chicken in a wonton filling.
I have to say the chicken stock was really good. My first sip was piping hot and really nice. The wonton filling was also good. The major letdown of these wontons was the wonton wrappers. I don't think any of the 6 wontons I ate had intact wrappings - they had all sort of disintegrated in the soup before I even picked them up. It's a real shame, because otherwise these wontons would have been really quite good. I'm not even sure what kind of wrappers they were using for these wontons, maybe it was more similar to rice paper or something. But yeah, the wrappers were incredibly disappointing. Debating whether to give this 3.5 or 4 stars... I feel like having your dumplings stay together is a fundamental aspect of making dumplings, let alone good ones. Just because they're in soup doesn't mean they get away with it.
Also these aren't the most filling meals in the world - I mean, it's pretty much just 6 or 10 wontons and liquid broth with some minor additions (shredded egg, seaweed, leek etc). Alright for lunch or even a bit of a midnight snack. Nothing groundbreaking.
